Upholstery cleaning across Puget Sound

A sofa collects everything a carpet does, concentrated into the six square feet where the whole family sits. Skin oil on the armrests, dog on the cushions, a coffee ring on the left seat, the crumbs that have worked down into the crevices. The difference is that a sofa is a mix of fabric, foam, frame and stitching, and cleaning it wrong shrinks the cover, browns the fibers or leaves it wet for days.

Every piece we clean gets tested first. The tag tells us the cleaning code (W, S, W/S or X) but the tag is sometimes missing, so our techs check for colorfastness and shrink on a hidden panel before anything else. Cotton, linen and polyester blends get hot water extraction with an upholstery tool. Microfiber gets a low-moisture pass so it does not water-spot. Velvet and chenille get groomed so the nap lies down. Leather is a different service entirely and we will tell you if that is what you have.

Customers regularly tell us the sectional they were about to replace looks new again, and that is not an exaggeration for a fabric sofa that has never been professionally cleaned. Red wine on a white suede sofa, blue ink on a beige dining chair, two big black dogs' worth of oil on a gray sectional — all three are from actual jobs, all three came out.

Jobs like yours

A customer had red wine on a white suede sofa and had already accepted that the sofa was ruined. Suede is one of the harder fabrics, but the tag was W/S, the dye was stable and the wine came out with a tannin remover and a careful low-moisture pass. She was more surprised than we were.

Two very large black dogs had been allowed on a gray sectional for years. The oil from their coats had darkened every cushion and the arms. It took a degreaser pre-treatment, real dwell time and a full extraction pass on every surface, and the customer said the couch looked brand new. That is a two-hour job done right, not a forty-minute one.

A week before Thanksgiving a woman called after hours with what she described as an upholstery emergency. The owner took the call, found a slot the next morning, and spent several hours on the sofa himself. It was ready for the holiday. That review is still one of our favorites.

A homeowner with orange upholstered dining room chairs had a few dark stains that she assumed were permanent. Dining chair seats are small enough to work carefully and they came out completely. Dining chairs are the most under-cleaned furniture in most houses.

A mother of several children had a couch that was, in her words, pretty bad. The cushions had every kind of food and drink stain and the arms were gray. It came back looking like new after cushions came out, crevices were vacuumed, every spot was pre-treated by type and the whole piece got a heated extraction pass.

Through the year in Puget Sound

Winter is sofa season: everyone is inside, the dog is on the couch, the takeout is on the couch, and the rain gear gets draped over the arm. A mid-winter sofa cleaning is the most noticeable single improvement in a family room.

Spring cleaning should include the furniture, not just the floors. Pollen and dust settle into fabric and the first warm day with the windows open brings more in. A sofa cleaned in May stays fresh through the summer.

Summer means sunscreen, wet swimsuits and sandy dogs on the furniture. Sunscreen in particular leaves an oily yellow cast on light fabric that needs a degreaser to remove.

Before the holidays is when we get the most sofa calls: guests are coming and the couch is gray. Book a week or two ahead in November and December. After the holidays, the calls are about wine and gravy, and both come out.

What we will tell you honestly

Urine that has soaked through the fabric into the foam core cannot be fully removed by surface cleaning. We treat what we can reach and tell you honestly what the outcome will be.

Some fabrics — silk, some viscose blends, unfinished leather, anything coded X — should not be wet-cleaned at all. We will tell you and, for leather, refer you to a specialist rather than risk it.

Sun-fading is not a stain and cleaning does not reverse it. A uniformly cleaned sofa can make old fading more visible because the rest of the fabric is brighter.
