Nail polish and paint on carpet
Acetone for polish (on synthetics only). Water for latex paint while wet; solvent once dry.
Nail polish is a lacquer. On nylon or polyester carpet, non-acetone remover or a small amount of acetone on a white cloth, dabbed and blotted, dissolves it. Test first; acetone melts some synthetic backings and damages wool and acetate. Never pour it.
Latex (water-based) paint that is still wet comes out with cool water and blotting. Once it dries it is plastic. Soften it with a small amount of rubbing alcohol or a citrus solvent and pick out what you can, then treat the remaining color.
Oil-based paint
Oil paint needs mineral spirits on a white cloth, dabbed. Ventilate. It is slow and it is a professional job for anything bigger than a drip.
Realistic expectations
Small nail polish spots on synthetic carpet usually come out completely. Dried paint that has been walked into the pile often lightens but leaves a shadow. We will tell you which you have.
