Mud, road grit and the Puget Sound wet season

Mud is the easiest stain to make worse. Wet mud spreads and works into the fiber when you wipe it. Let it dry completely, then vacuum it up. Most of it comes out as dry dirt. What is left is a small amount of soil bonded with whatever organic matter was in the mud, and that responds to a mild detergent and cool water.

The real damage from the wet season is not the visible mud. It is the fine grit and sand tracked in on wet shoes every day from October to May. Grit settles at the base of the carpet pile and acts like sandpaper every time someone walks across it, cutting the fibers. A carpet that has never been vacuumed at the base looks dull and matted not because it is dirty but because the fibers are physically damaged.

The fix

A good vacuum with a beater bar, used slowly, once or twice a week on traffic areas, removes most grit before it does damage. A doormat outside and a rug inside every entry catches the rest. Professional cleaning once a year pulls out what the vacuum cannot reach and re-lifts the pile.

Mudrooms and entries

If your entry is tiled, the grit goes into the grout instead. Grout that has gone gray in an entry is almost always winter grit ground into the pores. Tile and grout cleaning with a turbo tool brings it back, and sealing keeps it from happening again.
