Urine on a mattress: kids, pets and adults

Get it before it reaches the foam. Enzyme, not vinegar, and no plastic sheets over a wet spot.

Fresh urine on a mattress should be blotted hard with towels right away, standing on the towel if you can, to pull it up before it goes deeper. Then an enzyme cleaner, applied to the spot generously, left for fifteen minutes, and blotted. Dry with a fan. Do not cover the spot with a plastic sheet or a protector while it is damp.

Vinegar and baking soda, the internet's favorite, neutralize odor briefly but do not break down uric acid. Enzymes do.

Old stains

Dried urine stains yellow and smell when the room is warm. A professional mattress cleaning uses UV to find them, enzyme to treat them, an oxidizer to lighten the yellow and low-moisture extraction to remove the residue. Most old stains lighten dramatically; some very old ones leave a faint shadow.

Foam that is saturated

If urine has soaked deep into a memory foam core, it cannot be fully extracted without soaking the foam, which takes days to dry and can grow mildew. We treat the surface and tell you honestly what is possible.
