Chewing gum in carpet
Freeze it, shatter it, then treat the residue with a solvent.
Gum is a soft polymer that grips fiber. Pulling it warm stretches it deeper. The trick is to make it brittle: hold an ice cube (in a bag, so the carpet does not get wet) on the gum for a few minutes until it is hard, then break it up with a dull knife or a spoon and pick out the pieces.
What is left is a thin film and a gray shadow of dirt that stuck to the gum. Dab the film with a small amount of rubbing alcohol or a citrus-based solvent on a white cloth, then rinse with a damp cloth and blot dry.
On stairs and in traffic lanes
Gum that has been walked on for weeks is flattened into the pile and the dirt has bonded to it. A professional gum remover (a freezing spray or a specific solvent) plus agitation and extraction takes it out cleanly. It is a normal spot treatment on any carpet cleaning.
